Dates:
Wednesday 27 November - Sunday 8 December 2002
Location: Hippodrome/Circus Space, Great Yarmouth
A 10 day knowledge development research project inviting
5 professional artists and creatives to work alongside the
tx0om developers on the sound, video, costumes and media
Period covers involvement in Professional Development Lab
and Public Presentations
tx0om
apprenticeships is a unique development opportunity for
young professionals with some digital experience and provides
the chance to learn and exchange with top level international
artists working at an advanced level with wearable computing
and generative media systems.
SeaChange
is collaborating with Future Physical to co-ordinate the
processes of application and selection.
The
FIVE PLACES for apprenticeship available are linked to the
following areas of expertise:

It
is the role of each apprentice to assist the relevant tx0om
developer, the process involving shadowing the developer
on all aspects of their work. This includes production and
testing development and the set up and delivery of the public
presentation. Apprentices will learn about the intricate
workings of tx0om through learning how to run the installation.

Through
this process, apprentices will upgrade their specific artform
skills and general knowledge and understanding of interactivity,
digital technology and its creative use. The scheme also
facilitates in depth networking and exchange with experienced,
professional artists and will catalyst the development of
onward artistic collaborations for the apprentices.

Physical/SeaChange: txoom Apprenticeships
tx0om
tx0om is a pioneering installation taking the form of a
responsive PlaySpace, where the participants are invited
to actively take part in transforming the environment; shaping
the sound, playing with visuals, tangling in textiles and
thereby moulding their own experiences. The name tx0om is
an amalgam of the words textile and bloom, the two terms
guiding the aesthetic and the technological research of
the project. The PlaySpace is composed of several wearable
architecture elements including wall shirts, swing-dresses
and floor-skirts. By wearing these garments, the participants
literally wear the tx0om space, causing the physical environment
as a whole, simultaneously inciting growth and mutation
in the media worlds. Each player is sensed by the PlaySpace
using motion sensors and vision tracking systems incorporated
into the space. Gradually the social interaction between
the participants, and the responsive sound and visuals projected
throughout the PlaySpace, will change and evolve as they
begin to play together. Tx0om environments are designed
as public experiments, for testing and research in the field
of biomimetics, visualisation and sonification of human
behaviour and human-computer interaction in mixed realities.
tx0om is a co-production between Fo.AM, Future Physical/shinkansen,
Time's Up, Interactive Institute and KIBLA. It is supported
by Culture 2000 framework of the European Commission, Flemish
Ministry of Culture, Georgia Institute of Technology and
Daniel Langlois Foundation. Tx0om is based on the T-Garden
System (copyright, sponge and Fo.AM)

SeaChange
SeaChange was founded in 1997 as a catalyst for change in
Great Yarmouth.
Its brief was to support the town's regeneration process
through arts activities and development of the cultural
infrastructure. In its first three years, it achieved this
through project funding of £400,000 from the Arts
Council's A4E scheme with notable successes. SeaChange exists
to enable the Work of artists and creative technologists
to contribute to the regeneration of Great Yarmouth. It
is a catalyst to make things happen through training, production
and display. It promotes arts activity, events and training
in the context of the overall cultural deprivation of Great
Yarmouth, but particularly in the context of its specific
areas of social exclusion.
