Frankie the Robot (FTR) started life in 1996 as a test character for a realtime 3D graphics engine. A chance encounter with clubland led to his debut appearance as a virtual go-go dancer, up on the big screen in front of 15,000 screaming teenagers at a Universe NYE party at alongside Orbital and Jeff Mills. His appetite whetted, he escaped from corporate life and went solo under the auspices of www.autopilot.co.uk in early 1998. Since then he has performed at events ranging from mates' parties and underground events (Raya, Triology), music festivals (Glastonbury dance tent, Tribal Gathering, Burning Man, Homelands, Big Chill Enchanted Garden) and corporate clients (Casio, BBC Tomorrows World Live, MTV Europe Music Awards, Intel).

FTR is now launching his third career, this time as a virtual DJ. Armed with four virtual "hyperdecks", he cuts up, loops and rearranges tracks "on the fly" to create a new style of fast-paced, genre-busting, kiss-me-quick DJ set. Nurtured by a loving team of geeks, visual artists and DJs, Frankie's live sets are an idiosyncratic blend of realtime graphics and audio software research, Rod-Hull-and-Emu-style puppetry and good old fashioned hands-in-the-air dancefloor action.
